YUKO KIBAYASHI. SAINT-EMILION WINES, A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

Twenty-five years ago, Yuko Kibayashi started writing Les Gouttes de Dieu with her brother, Shin. Since, this manga about wine has become a global success. While in France, the screenwriter returned to the land that inspired her for Les Gouttes de Dieu: Saint-Emilion.

A PASSION FOR SAINT-EMILION

The Japanese have a long history with wine, they were among the first foreigners to come to the Bordeaux region. What they value in French wines and Saint-Emilion wines, is that they are marked with “a culture, a personality, nature, which gives a great product”, Yuko Kibayashi explains. During the 2014 Spring Festival, this great lover of wine was inducted Dame de la Jurade by the Jurade of Saint-Emilion. A title that sounds like recognition of her commitment to these round, silky wines. The Saint-Emilion wines are “the character of Merlot”, describes Yuko Kibayashi. With traditional Japanese cuisine, she also recommends “an old, matured and enhanced Saint Emilion wine”.

A WINE THAT IS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

The tradition of illustration is ever present among the Japanese, who are sensitive to landscapes and their representation. “Just before starting the scenario for Les Gouttes de Dieu, I came to Saint-Emilion, I looked at the vineyards, the atmosphere”, explains Yuko Kibayashi. A visit that “grew her motivation to write”, she adds. A special atmosphere is created by Saint-Emilion: “the rolling hills, the differences in the terroirs, it makes you want to create a story, new scenarios”, says the Japanese woman. If the story of Les Gouttes de Dieu has just ended in Japan, a new project has started, still about wine. Yuko Kibayashi certifies: “There will be many more references to the Saint-Emilion wines
