SAINT-EMILION, A REFERENCE BEYOND BORDERS

Bordeaux and Saint-Emilion wines are a reference to the whole world. We meet with one of the biggest enthusiast for those wines in Hong Kong, Vincent Cheung, Bordeaux Grand Maître de la Commanderie in Asia since 1997.

BORDEAUX WINES IN ASIA

In the 80s, Bordeaux châteaux’ owners set off to conquer Asia, in particular via Hong Kong. “Hong Kong is one of the oldest chapters of the Bordeaux Commanderie”, says Vincent Cheung. Bordeaux winemakers organized common dinners with Asian enthusiasts. A brotherhood was started. It seems to have worked because “a growing passion for Bordeaux” originates from it as noticed by Vincent Cheung.

A PASSION FOR SAINT-EMILION

Alongside Bordeaux wines, Asians also discovered Saint-Emilion wines. One of Vincent Cheung’s first memory? A Saint-Emilion Grand Cru bottle bought in London. The evolution of this same château, which has now become Premier Grand Cru Classé A, brings Vincent Cheung to salute Saint-Emilion men’s work: “beyond the good terroir, you need good people to produce a wine”.

SAINT-EMILION, REFERENCE WINES

To Vincent Cheung, Saint-Emilion wines represent harmony, “they have more Merlot and are very well balanced wines”, he says. He moreover believes that no matter the tasting moment or the accompanying meal, you can always enjoy a Saint-Emilion wine. Proof of their unique character, they are a reference to the whole world. “It means that those wines are the best, otherwise we would not compare ourselves to them”, Vincent Cheung notices.
