What is your role on the property?

Director and Oenologist in charge of the global management of the property.

"Château Rolland-Maillet expresses all the typicity of the great Saint-Emilion wines produced on the noble clay and gravel soils."

Can you tell us about your wine estate?

In the 1920s, the Michel Rolland family chose to establish its vineyard on the border of the great terroirs of Pomerol, at the location called “Maillet” in the mythical Saint-Emilion appellation.

Covering today a little more than three hectares on the magnificent terroirs of the “Corbins” area, the vineyard, composed of old vines, rests on a clay-gravel soil. The vineyard is composed of 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.

As a winemaker, general manager and oenologist, I oversee practices that were revolutionary when Michel Rolland first implemented them, enabling the preservation of the fruitiness and intrinsic quality of our wine. These practices include green harvesting, leaf removal, search for optimal ripeness, manual destemming, sorting of grapes before and after destemming, control of fermentation temperature, and regular organoleptic and analytical controls during maceration and maturation of the wines.

The grapes of Château Rolland-Maillet benefit from a rigorous selection and the greatest care brought by the team of Château Le Bon Pasteur in Pomerol.

The wine benefits from all the experience and know-how of Michel Rolland. It expresses the typicality of Saint-Emilion wines.

Can you tell us about the awarded vintage?

Winter 2018 is starting out mild and wet. Spring is still mild, but above all, it rains with a relentless rhythm almost every other day.
The vine bathed in heat and water grows madly, finding itself confronted with the development of this fungus so dreaded by the winegrowers: mildew.

2018 will be remembered as the year of all exceptions.

It will take the energy and attention of an entire team to accompany the vine by remaining attentive and caring.
In June, the winemaker dreamed that the weather would turn radically beautiful. And that’s what happened! The heat and light of summer settled in for good.

Nature is sometimes fickle but remains generous at the right time.

The water reserves and the cool nights consolidated the aromatic freshness and the phenolic potential of our grapes.

The harvest could be organized without stress, during radiant days, in a great joy.

A magnificent and radiant vintage in the image of this incredible summer which shaped its identity and decided its destiny.

A deep ruby color with a garnet edge. The nose is intense and clean, with aromas of fresh red fruits, spicy touches of cedar, hints of cocoa and roasted almonds. On the palate, the attack is lively, the wine is full-bodied and deep, and the tannins are fine and supple in texture, with a long finish.

With time, Château Rolland Maillet gains in smoothness, after aging, the wine will offer a bouquet of undergrowth, truffle and fine herbs.

Can you suggest a food and wine pairing with the winning vintage?

Excellent with a duck breast with figs.
