A look back at the 7th edition of Vins Km de Saint-Emilion

Sunday March 20th saw the 7th edition of the Vins Km de Saint-Emilion. On this occasion, the Jurade de Saint-Emilion had the honor of inducting three personalities.

The Vins Km de Saint-Emilion, the solidarity race in the Saint-Emilion vineyards

The Vins Km de Saint-Emilion event was created in 2016 by the Libourne Saint-Emilion Rotary Club. This walking race takes place in the exceptional landscape of the first vineyard to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Participants have the chance to cross more than 30 wine Châteaux!

All proceeds go to brain disease research, represented by the Institut des Maladies Neurodégénératives and the Fédération pour la Recherche sur le Cerveau.

The research

As the population ages, researchers anticipate an “explosion in neurological pathologies”. Yet neurologists are few and far between.

The creation of Bordeaux Neurocampus has increased the potential for neuroscience research. Today, there are 51 teams comprising 700 people, including 250 researchers and teacher-researchers, 130 PhD students, 90 post-docs and 200 technicians and engineers. The Bordeaux Neurocampus also boasts 1 Laboratory of Excellence (LabEx BRAIN), 20 research platforms and technical facilities, 30 state-of-the-art microscopes, 10 start-ups and 250 publications per year.

Brain diseases

Today, at least 3 million people in France are affected. A quarter of the population is affected by a neurological disease, including :

Degenerative diseases: Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s
Inflammatory diseases: multiple sclerosis, epilepsy
Psychiatric diseases: stroke, suicide

The cost of brain diseases represents 685 billion euros on a European scale.
