Every year, the Coupe des Crus de Saint-Emilion honours 24 winners.
These men and women work day after day to produce wines that live up to the quality and environmental commitment of Saint-Emilion wines.
Find out more about these properties in Lussac Saint-Emilion, Puisseguin Saint-Emilion, Saint-Emilion and Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, as well as the Grands Crus Classés.
Today, Arnaud d’Arfeuille, Director and in charge of estate management at Château La Serre, takes us on a tour of this family-run Château and its history.
Château La Serre, recently awarded Favourites by the Coupe des Crus de Saint-Émilion (Saint-Emilion Wine Challenge), is revealed in all its splendour. This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé comes from an exceptional terroir, rising from limestone quarries to the top of the family estate. Immerse yourself in the history of an estate that combines tradition and excellence.
I am the Director of Château La Serre, a 7-hectare vineyard that has been in our family since 1956.
Our estate, 7 hectares in a single block, is located 200 meters from the historic heart of Saint-Emilion. From the depths of the quarries to the nearby bell tower of Saint-Emilion, from the limestone bowels to the top of the family home, Château La Serre rises from a resolutely vertical terroir.
Château La Serre has been HVE certified since the 2020 vintage. We have also changed our working methods, and are now back to more traditional and natural methods. In concrete terms, we no longer use insecticides or weedkillers. We also plant semi-planted cover crops every year, 1 row in 2, to help regenerate our soil and give it matter to live on.
What’s unique about our wines is that they have great structure and elegance thanks to our limestone plateau, which allows the roots and vines to easily tap into this limestone. All this means that our wines can be laid down for up to 30-40 years without losing their freshness or acidity.
Château La Serre wine is elegant, fresh and well-structured. It’s a wine, as well as all our different crus, that you can let mature for few decades.
Château La Serre age very well after 10-15 years.
For our Château La Serre, I recommend that you drink it and enjoy it with a Limousin-style entrecote steak, one from the d’Arfeuille family!
I still find the idea of the Coupe des Crus de Saint-Emilion interesting, the idea of allowing the Châteaux of Saint-Emilion and the surrounding area to compete against each other, particularly over several vintages.
It’s a great pleasure to have been selected by the tasters. It shows and congratulates all the work that has been done for over 60 years by our family since we have been in Saint-Emilion.
Next time you’re in Saint-Emilion, make sure to come and see Château La Serre! You’ll be able to admire the superb view, the superb location of La Serre, its terroir and, of course, its vineyards!
