Gustav Karlstrom was one of the actors of a highly acclaimed musical moment at the 2015 Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival. With Grégory Privatand Sonny Troupé, the singer offered a jazz interpretation of wines by young winemakers of Saint-Emilion.
IMPROVISING ON THE SAINT-EMILION WINES
Grégory Privat on the piano, Sonny Troupé on percussions and Gustav Karlstrom singing: it is this trio that was chosen to interpret the Saint-Emilion wines, at the Musical Tasting organized by Arômes de Jeunesse. Unlike his comrades, the singer had already taken part in this kind of exercise: “I did it with friends in Stockholm, it is an experience that I like a lot”. With his velvet voice, Gustav Karlstrom has shared his art in small steps. When taken by his emotions, the young man mingled his voice with piano chords and percussion: “I took the straightest path. For example, if a taste was strong, I went in the direction of strength. I just let go”, he says.
THE MUSICAL TASTING, A PLEASURE FOR THE SENSES
For this Musical Tasting, the three musicians favored the here and now. Intentionally, they didn’t practice very much. “We just did 5 minutes of sound-check, for the harmonies, to really leave room for improvisation”, says Grégory Privat, leader of the trio. Before each piece, a young sommelier commented on the wine. At the same time, the musicians and the public infused its aromas and structure. Between the singer and the musicians, it was then a question of feeling. Grégory Privat says: “Gustav is a great singer and a great musician. He hears what I am playing and then hears what notes he can sing”. Thanks to the trio of musicians, Saint-Emilion wine lovers were able to “hear a wine”. Listening supplemented the senses usually stimulated by tasting. The hearing, sight, smell, touch and taste: Arômes de Jeunesse Musical Tasting was truly a pleasure for all the senses.
