People in the living world
Women and men (winegrowers, local residents, tourists and visitors from all over the world) are at the heart of our environmental approach. Whether it’s respect for each other to live well together, the attractiveness of winegrowing jobs or working conditions, these subjects are part of the continuous improvement of Saint-Emilion wines.
The attractiveness of our professions is a key issue for winegrowers, who are looking for workers who are becoming increasingly scarce.
Among the initiatives undertaken in our region, the program run by the “Vignerons du Vivants” collective and “Apprentis d’Auteuil” is aimed at young people who are far from the job market. The aim is to train young people aged 18 to 30 to take part in the winegrowing professions and help them find a job. It’s 100% hands-on training, with châteaux that are willing and committed.
It calls on experts in agroforestry, agroecology, organic farming and biodynamics to raise young people’s awareness of the professions and challenges of tomorrow. Saint-Emilion wine estates regularly welcome people undergoing retraining with the “Apprentis d’Auteuil”.
The urbanization of agricultural areas has given rise to a number of problems, such as the application of crop protection products, burning to combat frost, and noise pollution caused by farm machinery.
To address these issues, the Saint-Emilion Wines Council facilitates dialogue between local elected officials, winegrowers and local residents.
The Wines of Saint-Emilion have already identified sensitive sites (schools, kindergartens, nursery schools, etc.) near which hedges have been planted. We are continuing this work, in association with the various town councils in the Jurisdiction, while at the same time raising public awareness of the new practices adopted by our winegrowers, which are ever more virtuous and respectful of the environment.
