Qualified professor of classics and wine lover, he had the good idea of taking wine tasting classes at the Académie du Vin in Paris in 1977. He then led, with Thierry Desseauve, the Revue du vin de France. Starting in 1995, they created the French wine ranking, that quickly became the yearly guide for wine lovers. They now publish under the La Martinière Le Guide Bettane & Desseauve des Vins de France editions. His independent judgement and his knowledge of world wine made him an internationnally renowned and recognized expert.
