Every year, the Coupe des Crus de Saint-Emilion honours 24 winners.
These men and women work day after day to produce wines that live up to the quality and environmental commitment of Saint-Emilion wines.
Find out more about these estates in Lussac Saint-Emilion, Puisseguin Saint-Emilion, Saint-Emilion and Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, as well as the Grands Crus Classés.
Today, Fabrice BANDIERA, Technical Director of Château des Laurets, introduces us to this Puisseguin Saint-Emilion acquired in the early 2000s by Ariane and Philippe de Rothschild.
2024 Favourites – Château des Laurets
You may not know Château des Laurets yet, but you certainly know the family to which this Saint-Emilion estate belongs.
Bought by the Rothschild family in the early 2000s, Château des Laurets is a large, block-long vineyard in the commune of Puisseguin Saint-Emilion.
Fabrice Bandiera has been working there for many years. Now Technical Manager, he tells us all we need to know about this 2024 winner of the Coupe des Crus de Saint-Emilion!
I’m the estate’s Technical Director, which means that I’m in charge of managing this beautiful and (above all) large estate, which is located in the commune of Puisseguin Saint-Emilion.
If I had to sum it up in 3 words, I’d say first and foremost ‘tasty’, but also ‘complex’ and finally ‘modern’.
Château des Laurets has a rich wine-growing past. This is particularly evident in the heritage that can still be seen on the property: a Napoleon III-style château built in 1860. This history lives on and attracted the attention of Ariane and Benjamin de Rothschild in the early 2000s. Today, we do everything we can to make the most of the magnificent potential of this property, which is blessed with such a rich past.
What makes our estate special is that it is planted on an exceptional terroir made of a clay-limestone plateau, sitting on the bedrock. This terroir gives our wines a real signature, recognisable in particular by the depth and complexity of our wines. Finally, this terroir also provides us with a very fine acidic tension, offering an expression of classic Bordeaux with a touch of modernity.
What’s unique and remarkable about Château des Laurets is that it’s all in one piece. Today, we have 110 hectares of vines, enabling us to grow a variety of grape varieties. 50 hectares of the property are in the Puisseguin Saint-Emilion appellation, enabling us to produce the wine that was so much appreciated by the tasters at the Coupe des Crus in 2024. You could say that this is probably one of the largest properties in the Saint-Emilion area, just like that, all in one piece.
This wine’s structure means it can be laid down for 8-10 years or more. But it can also be drunk young.
So, the little guilty pleasure I absolutely recommend is to try Châteaux des Laurets with a Brie de Meaux.
We took part in this competition in a spirit of stimulation and challenge. To be able to measure ourselves against the other crus in the appellation and see how the tasters felt about our wine.
Winning the Coupe des Crus is a great source of pride for the whole team. It’s obviously a great recognition of the work we’ve done over the last few years on this estate. It gives us even more incentive to keep on producing a wine that pleases those who taste it.
