For the past 5 years, Terre de Vins magazine, in partnership with the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bordeaux (CIVB), has been organising the Bordeaux Committed Vineyard Awards.
This event rewards and highlights the commitments and virtuous practices put in place by players in the Bordeaux wine industry.
Saint-Emilion wines were particularly in the spotlight in 2023. Hikes, educational workshops, the Biotope Festival, prize-winners… Here’s a look back at the 5th Bordeaux Committed Vineyard !
For the first edition of the Bordeaux Committed Vineyard walk, Terre de Vins magazine naturally thought of Saint-Emilion!
It has to be said that the environment and the development of virtuous practices are deeply rooted in the DNA of the winegrowers of the Saint-Emilion appellations.
In 2023, the specifications for the Saint-Emilion appellations were amended to include the requirement for environmental certification. The aim is to reach the target of 100% of Saint-Emilion vineyard being certified.
Two trails of 5 and 9 km were proposed to the 470 hiker who took part in the event on Sunday, June 4th.
It was an opportunity to (re)discover the vineyards, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural landscapes from a new angle. For the occasion, some of the Châteaux opened their doors and offered educational workshops for walkers. Carbon footprint, biodiversity, human-friendly practices… Participants in the Bordeaux Committed Vineyard walk were able to see for themselves the environmental commitment of Saint-Emilion’s winegrowers.
At the end of their loop, sophro tasting workshops, discovery workshops with the Bordeaux Wine School and foodtrucks (including the Saint-Emilion Wine Trip) awaited the walkers.
Admission was charged, and the event raised over €1,400. The entire amount was donated to the Biotope Festival association.
The Biotope Festival, an association set up a few years ago in Saint-Emilion, aims to awaken and support changes in practices that are aware of environmental and social issues.
