Every year, the Coupe des Crus de Saint-Emilion honors 24 winners.
These men and women work day after day to produce wines that live up to the quality and environmental commitment of Saint-Emilion wines.
Discover the portraits of these properties in Lussac Saint-Emilion, Puisseguin Saint-Emilion, Saint-Emilion and Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, as well as Grands Crus Classés.
Today, the spotlight is on Château Penau Laplagne, with a portrait of its winemaker and manager, Paul-Auguste Saurue.
Favourite 2024 – Château Penau Laplagne
In 1989, Michel Saurue bought the Vignobles Saurue property from his Uncle. Since their first vintage in 1992, the estate has grown considerably.
Today, the new generation has joined Michel and Maryse, making it possible to offer 4 crus, under the Montagne Saint-Emilion, Puisseguin Saint-Emilion and Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellations.
Read Paul-Auguste’s account of his participation in the Coupe des Crus, the history of the estate and its winning wine.
I’m the manager of Vignobles François Saurue. My role at Château Penau Laplagne is quite broad, from vineyard work to the winery and marketing. I’m a jack-of-all-trades, and that’s what I like about this job.
My parents were the first generation of winegrowers to create the estate in 1989, and in 1992 the Château’s 1st vintage was released.
My parents didn’t come from a wine-growing background, but thanks to their hard work, today we have 15 hectares of vines, certified as having high environmental value.
In 3 words, our Château is above all about family, passion and evolution.
Château Penau Laplagne is unique in that it is a single-vineyard estate, i.e. 100% Merlot.
It’s a grape variety characteristic of our region, our appellation and our terroir.
Château Penau Laplagne is vinified in temperature-controlled concrete vats and aged for 12 months in barrels.
This gives it an aromatic finesse that can be drunk at any moment.
Our wine can be kept for 15 years without any problem, but I like to drink it between 8 and 10 years.
I’m going to stay classic, but with a good rib of beef grilled with vine shoots, it’s perfect !
I’ve been taking part in the Coupe des Crus since the beginning. It’s very interesting to be judged on 3 vintages, and it shows the consistency and quality of our wines.
For me, winning the Cup is a source of pride and recognition for all the work we’ve put in.
Wine tasting is a discovery, so come and discover me !
