THREE MASTERS ON THE SAME STAGE
On 22nd July 2017, the Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival (21st to 23rd July, 2017) will bring together three masters on the same stage: guitarist Biréli Lagrène, violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and bassist Kyle Eastwood. In the magic of the Douves du Palais Cardinal, the trio will interpret jazz classics as well as personal compositions. An exciting project with outstanding musicians!
A FIRST AT THE 2017 SAINT-EMILION JAZZ FESTIVAL
Jean-Luc Ponty, Biréli Lagrène and Kyle Eastwood come for the first time at the Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival. Everyone ticked 22nd July with an anticipated pleasure. Particularly the violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. The Frenchman, who lives in the United States, also has “a foot in the world of rock” and very rarely plays in jazz festivals.
“I cannot wait to come back to Saint-Emilion. I came here once but as a tourist. I did not know the festival, but I drink a lot of Saint-Emilion! So, I have two reasons (and more) to be impatient to play at the Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival”.
Kyle Eastwood also came to Saint-Emilion a few years ago. A memorable visit.
“I remember a very beautiful city. And since music and wine are the two things I prefer, I’m happy to come back and play here, I’m even a little excited”.
For Biréli Lagrène, it’s a real first. Just before playing the 2017 Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival, the trio will tour with the trumpeter Stéphane Belmondo. This Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival patron will be able to talk to them about the unique atmosphere that prevails in Saint-Emilion. This will reinforce Biréli Lagrène’s pleasure of playing.
“When I think of Saint-Emilion, my taste buds are awake. There is everything about taste. Whether it is food or the magnificent wines produced there. And also, the landscape is particularly beautiful. It is a mixture of pleasures. We look forward to seeing you!”
UNRELEASED WORKS TO BE PLAYED AT THE 2017 SAINT-EMILION JAZZ FESTIVAL
To not only play repertoires of big names of jazz, but also propose unique and personal compositions: here is the project of the masters Biréli Lagrène, Jean-Luc Ponty and Kyle Eastwood.
Twenty years ago, this “concept of temporary encounter” came to the violinist Jean-Luc Ponty’s mind, with the bassist Stanley Clarke and the guitarist Al Di Meola.
A project to which Jean-Luc Ponty added Biréli Lagrène in 2012 for his 50 years of musical career.
“It’s a pleasure to do this project because it’s different from what I usually do. Stanley was not available for the Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival. We had to find a new partner and Kyle convinced us. It brings something very different. The idea is to share the musical maturity of each one and see how one can stimulate each other to go beyond our limits”.

“Humanly it’s going great. No one is big headed and that, it has no price. There are a lot of things happening musically. It’s a very good musical mix. Improvisation will play a big part. It’s very open. This is jazz: we can stay sharp if someone wants a little more freedom. ” Biréli Lagrène
The trio will play about fifteen pieces. The audience will discover three experienced artists who are waiting for just one thing: sharing.
“The important thing is to be a good receiver of emotions. We choose music that moves us, makes us wiggle, we start playing and we see what happens with the audience. In general, what is beautiful when one plays in concert is that it becomes a space of experiences shared with the audience. If we can make them feel what we feel: we have reached our goal “.
